If you specifically don't like the russian punch cake, please don't make the mistake of trying it. It was.... I can't even find the words to describe it. I wish the waitress had warned me beforehand that it tasted nothing like a typical dessert. it was literally not sweet, but very sour. service was not very great. we also had the famous dessert and its just pancake if you eat it without the jam. you can taste the eggs in it. very overrated. you also have to wait in a line.
Contrary to what everyone thinks that an old cafe with many years of history must have good quality and great taste, I must say that it was not the case at all, you can try the most ordinary cafe and sweets here. The cheesecake was of such poor quality and had no soft texture that it could not be eaten at all. I could have made much better choices at this price.
we ended up here by chance, we were immediately intrigued by the smell and the long line. the line to get in was extremely long, we opted for take away (there was always a line but much faster). the pancakes is as good as it is simple and this makes it pleasant and tasty. it was a really nice experience, we will definitely try it again when we return to vienna
We visited Demel, because we were curious about the famous dessert, kaiserschmarrn. There was a short line for takeaway, window service. We opted to take an outdoor table. We were seated after 10 minutes. While we enjoyed our people watching, it took 45 minutes before our order was taken, then another 30 minutes for our two drinks and one order of kaiserschmarrn to arrive. It was all very good, very pricey, but it’s paying for the experience. What we did notice, was a pickpocket working the various crowds that came to watch the chef through the window. During our almost 2 hours at Demel, we saw him work multiple groups. Whether or not he was successful, we don’t know. If you visit, just be aware, and this was an off season visit.
The interior is gorgeous, elegant. We went for the Kaiserschmarrn. And as well we tried some cakes to go Dobos cake(decadent)and the Russian Punch Cake(boozy and fruity).Got a few delicious chocolates and candies from the shop. Worth for a cup of coffee, slice of cake or just walk through.
