Imperial Treasury Vienna

I was really excited to visit the museum and was worried that I would run out of time entering just over an hour before closing. I was able to view all of the exhibits and read most of the descriptions before the museum closed. It was a very quiet and reflective place, there were toilets, lockers, and a small gift shop where you could buy drinks (which were not allowed inside).

If you are visiting the Hofburg Palace, do not skip the Imperial Treasury! The collection of crowns, royal robes, and massive gemstones is unreal. Just looking at the Reichskrone alone fills me with awe. The interactive board explaining the different facets of the crown was pretty interesting. There was a large section which housed the Ecclesiastical collection which was really extensive but was not really for me. Overall, it is easily one of the best museums in Vienna! Though slightly pricey, it is absolutely worth it. Will take around 1 - 1.5hr to walk through the museum comfortably.

Some interesting items to look at. I must say the British crown jewels are better. I could imagine some of those items in my house... We bought the tickets in the day from the ticket office. No back packs inside, you do get your €2 back from the locker. Usual gift shop before and after the exhibit, and toilets are free to use

The Imperial Treasury is interesting, with a strong focus on royal and religious garments. If you’re expecting to see a large collection of royal jewels, you may be disappointed, as only a few are on display. That said, the pieces are incredibly well preserved, especially considering their age. I was a bit let down by the limited jewels and the heavy emphasis on religious items, but overall the visit was fine and worth seeing if you’re interested in imperial history.

I went right at opening time on a Monday, and it felt like I had the whole place to myself. Very beautiful pieces on display. They keep it very dark inside to help preserve the pieces, which made reading the placards sometimes difficult (and made the photos I took look terrible). A lot of embroidery (incredible) and religious pieces (not the most interesting to me). However, I did enjoy the room with the piece of Jesus’ loin cloth, and all the clothing from 1200. And the large amber carving. There is a whole room filled with jewels that I also really enjoyed! As well as the agate bowl and “unicorn” horn. A very interesting experience overall. I spent about an hour here.
