Klimt-Villa

A fascinating place, though probably not for the casual art observer. This isn't a museum as such, but rather a place of remembrance. The villa was built around Klimt's painting studio, but the studio itself still survives. Furniture in the style originally present has been lovingly recreated to give insight into Klimt's life. The largest exhibition is on the loss of many of his works. The majority of Klimt's clients were from the Jewish community, so many paintings were taken from their original owners in the 30s and 40s. Provenance research and restitution work is still famously ongoing on many artworks. The exhibition focuses on Klimt's patrons and what happened to their collections. His life is touched on as well, but only peripherally. There's an audio tour, but I'd definitely recommend the daily guided tour if you speak German (or ask if an English one is available) Our tour was hosted by Klimt's great granddaughter, who was extremely knowledgeable about the artist, his works, and his private life, providing a fascinating view into his life. Overall, it's a very interesting place for those who are interested in provenance research, or those who just want to stand in the studio in which Klimt used to paint. Don't expect a huge exhibition of his works though, there are very few original items on display, most are copies, though high quality ones.

Although Klimt himself never lived here, as a fan of his work, I do not regret visiting this museum. However, the level of service by the ticket seller, who also gave me a brief tour of the museum, was… utterly deplorable. He seemed disturbed by my visit the whole time (I was the only visitor), and when I tried to make payment for some postcards, he kept asking, “Only this?” The tone of his voice and his grumpy face really ruined my experience… I hope the museum will reflect on my feedback and honor not only the works of a genius artist, but also the people who came by to appreciate his works.

A beautiful place if you enjoy small and informative museums. The staff is very helpful in explaining how the original studio was inside and what the villa transformed into. There is a lot to learn and read about- some bittersweet - yet important information for us to take in. I enjoyed the opportunity to purchase some cards that hold special meaning to me personally, as I love many of his pieces. Please visit and enjoy.

Had to travel a lot to get there, but wasn't really worth the time, the cost and the effort: whatever is there are dupes of the real stuff, including the furniture, which is actually kept and displayed at other museums. Even reading the parts in English requires an exceptional effort: they're printed in white on transparent glass, that you are supposed to read with the background of white walls. Interesting way to attract international tourists...

Excellent experience. A wonderful choice for those interested in Klimt’s life and work. We used headphones. The staff were extremely polite, especially the gentleman we met around 17:00 on Friday 24 October. Highly recommended.
