Reviews
The museum quarter courtyard during December had a nice Christmas market, this was a modern take on a Christmas market and was mainly food and drink. It wasn’t too busy which was great compared to the over crowded Christmas markets nearby and was a great place to hang out and have a mulled wine.
The Museum Quartier (MQ) is one of the largest art and culture centres in the world, combining historical architecture with modern design. The complex was built in the former imperial stables, which were transformed into a museum space in the 20th century. It houses the Leopold Museum (Art Nouveau and Expressionism), the Museum of Contemporary Art (MUMOK) and the Architecture Centre. The main patio of the MQ is a lively meeting place, especially in summer, when colourful deckchairs are set up and cultural events are organised. The contrast between the Baroque façade of the old buildings and the minimalist shapes of the new museums creates a unique atmosphere. ⭐ A great place for art lovers and relaxation. The combination of historical and modern architecture is impressive, and the spacious courtyard is a perfect place to relax. The Leopold Museum and MUMOK are worth a visit. I recommend it!
The amount of art and any cultural in on place is so amazing. There is something for all ages. Truly magnificent. It really shows what proper funding of the arts and culture can achieve
The site is open around the clock and entry is free; there are no gates and no barriers. The permanent exhibition "Vienna. My History" at the Wien Museum is free of charge and can be visited without a ticket. Please note that there may be waiting times if there is a large crowd. On the first Sunday of every month, free entry to the permanent and special exhibitions at all locations.
This was such a nice surprise. We were staying at the Sans Souci hotel and for several of walking around and past this complex we decided to go into one of the entrances. Apparently, this used to be the Habsburgs' stables hence the horses' heads above every entrance to the complex. These days it houses several museums. One of them is quite ugly, a big lumpy grey block, that sticks out like a sore thumb. I know Modern Art exists and all that, but let's not say yes to every silly and talentless dream.
