Reviews
Please consider spending a full day at Schönbrunn Zoo, as it offers far more than a traditional zoo visit — it is a place where history, nature, and education come together in a truly special way. As the oldest zoo in the world still in operation, located within the grounds of the Schönbrunn Palace, it carries a unique sense of heritage that can be felt from the moment you enter. The setting alone, with its elegant architecture and landscaped surroundings, makes the experience unforgettable. The zoo is thoughtfully designed, focusing on animal welfare, conservation, and natural habitats. Each enclosure encourages visitors to observe animals in environments that closely resemble their native homes. From giant pandas and elephants to giraffes, big cats, and marine life, the diversity of species is impressive and engaging for visitors of all ages. Informational displays throughout the zoo add depth to the experience, making it both enjoyable and educational. What truly sets Schönbrunn Zoo apart is its balance between accessibility and respect for wildlife. Paths are well organized, allowing for relaxed exploration without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. There are quiet corners for reflection, as well as lively areas that bring a sense of wonder and excitement. Spending an entire day here allows you to fully appreciate not only the animals, but also the broader message of conservation and coexistence. By the end of your visit, you leave with lasting memories, a deeper appreciation for the natural world, and the feeling that you have experienced something meaningful within a historic and beautiful setting.
Absolutely wonderful experience! The Vienna Zoo was truly amazing and a must-visit when you are in Vienna. The zoo is beautifully maintained, very well organized, and perfect for visitors of all ages. One of the proudest and most memorable moments for us was seeing the rare Nepalese one-horned rhinoceros such an incredible sight! We loved every moment of our visit and would highly recommend this zoo to anyone traveling to Vienna. Truly a world-class experience!
Visiting Schönbrunn Zoo during the winter months offers a unique perspective on one of the world's oldest and most beautiful zoological gardens. While we initially had concerns about the cold weather, we found that a significant number of animals were quite active. Even though several paths and specific exhibits were closed for the season, the overall experience remained highly engaging for our entire family. The absolute highlights of our trip were the giant panda and the polar bear. Seeing the polar bear in a colder climate felt particularly authentic, as it was energetic and clearly at home in the crisp air. The children were also thrilled to see the leopards and the cheetahs. Despite the lower temperatures, these predators were visible and provided a great viewing experience for the kids. For younger visitors, the goats and penguins were a massive hit. The zoo is designed in a way that allows for close encounters with some of the more docile animals, which kept the children entertained throughout the afternoon. We also appreciated the abundance of indoor exhibits. These warm spaces allowed us to escape the biting cold periodically while still observing various species in climate-controlled environments. We transitioned to the zoo immediately after completing our tour of the Schönbrunn Palace. It serves as a perfect follow-up activity because of its proximity to the palace grounds. We ended up staying until the zoo closed and felt that the price of admission was well worth it. If you are visiting Vienna in the winter, do not let the weather deter you from spending a full afternoon here.
This place was enormous, and beautiful. There are great historical exhibits and so many animals to visit! We were there for 3 hours and only saw about half (including the treetop walk and a 20 minutes code and treats stop at the playground.) We were 3 adults and a 9 year old, and we could have spent all day. It was well worth the 12€. admission.
Schönbrunn Palace & Zoo is ideal for family visits and a fantastic experience for both adults and children. The palace gardens are wide, safe, and beautiful, giving kids plenty of space to walk, explore, and enjoy the outdoors. The Tiergarten Schönbrunn Zoo is very family-friendly, with well-designed enclosures, clear paths for strollers, and lots of interesting animals that keep children engaged throughout the visit. There are many places to rest, eat, and take breaks, which makes the day easy and enjoyable with kids. A wonderful mix of learning, fun, and fresh air. Highly recommended for families visiting Vienna.
