Spanish Riding School

A Beautiful Experience of Vienna’s Classical Tradition Visiting the Spanish Riding School was one of the most elegant and uniquely Viennese experiences during my trip to Vienna. I visited in early April and booked tickets in advance, which I would definitely recommend, especially during the tourist season. Once you arrive, you simply wait at the reception entrance area according to the language option you selected when purchasing the ticket. There are separate groups for German and English guided tours. Since I do not speak German, I joined the English tour, and I was genuinely impressed by the young female guide. Her explanations were extremely professional, clear, and engaging. Even if you are not deeply familiar with equestrian culture or classical riding traditions, the guide makes the history and training methods easy to appreciate. The atmosphere inside feels very different from an ordinary tourist attraction. It is quiet, refined, and full of historical atmosphere. You can really feel that this is not simply a horse show for entertainment, but a place carrying centuries of Austrian imperial tradition. What I especially appreciated was how well organized everything was. The process from entry to the guided tour felt smooth and relaxed, without the chaos that sometimes happens at heavily touristed attractions. Even for visitors who are not usually interested in horses, I think this place is worth experiencing at least once because it represents a very distinctive part of Vienna’s cultural identity.

I took the guided tour of the Spanish riding school on a weekday (corpus Christi day) at 1pm and our guide, whose name I cannot remember, was fabulous. She was very knowledgeable about the facility and answered all the questions my group threw at her. Our group consisted of about 23 people which was a perfect size (not too big). We got to see the indoor and outdoor riding/training rings, the tack room and the outdoor and indoor stables. The facility was beyond beautiful. We got the see a few of the horses and they were beautiful! I was bummed I could not touch them but its understandable. We even saw some of the barn cats and could pet them! I would reccomend this tour highly. I did not go to a riding practice.

I watched a show shortly before christmas. I had expected a higher level of horse riding than your average dressage competiton, but was sadly disappointed. Horses were tense, visibly underprepered with small amout of muscle, some were even a bit lame (limping) or on the verge of it. They spooked regurally, few refused to get close to one part of arena, or leave it. On the first show, one of the riders fell down in walk because of it. Higher elements were often forced, one horse repetadly refused to perform capriola, and got hit with a whip many times, buckling in response. Arena while beautiful was wery hard to see from higher places. Taking pictures during the performance was not allowed. I had this image in my mind of Spanish Riding School being more classical, proper way to train a horse, with stroger adherence to the rules, like not riding with nose behind a vertical line, or more active hind legs. This show did not represent that at all. I dont know if this show was the highest level of training performed in this school, or if better riders and horses are saved for more important shows, not just for random turists. If that was the best they had to offer it's just sad. In many opinions there are words about this show being for horse people, i could not disagree more. If you are in any way connected with horses, especially profesionally, you will take no pleasure in watching it.

We had planned sinds long, but really disappointed with the show. Suggestion: don't buy the ticket for gallery 2, only from few seats you have a good view, otherwise from most of the seats very bad view. Its not for old people or having knee problems, lots of round stairs. First 10-15 minutes, horses are just making the rounds. Its nothing to watch. Most of the people were curious when the real training will start but 😂. Please buy the ticket on a official site of the show. The hall is beautiful.

One of the most awe inspiring events I have attended ❤️ I am a lifelong horse lover and rider. The moment the white stallions entered the ring I started to cry. The emotion of what I was witnessing was intense. I grew up never thinking I would get to be here, in Vienna, at the Spanish Riding School. I was star struck. But, for me, this was fulfilling a little girls fantasy. Again, I was giddy and star struck. Think of the girls who fainted when they saw the Beatles back in the 60s. Ok, so, let me throw some advise out there for people. This is not a show, it is not the circus, it is not a concert. What it is, is history,military training and beautiful animals working together with their human partners. We, as the public,.have been.allowed or invited to observe the fruits of their labor. And, in such a beautiful and historical location. So, of none of that would entertain you,.do not attend. If you have someone in your life that would be awe inspired to see such a "performance" please take that person and enjoy watching someone you love be swept away by their childhood dreams. Baseball fans think of your favorite players playing a game in front of you. Or football fans, watching the best of football players performing in a great arena " superbowl" and you are there! Same thing. I have never been star struck before but it was a great feeling and my husband loved seeing me be happy.
