Icelandic Street Food is an amazing spot located right by the Prime Minister’s offices, super central and easy to find. They have plenty of tables, but make sure you grab a table first then you go at the counter and order. They offer three soups, all served in delicious bread bowls: Lamb soup, Shellfish soup, Tomato soup (be careful, it’s spicy). The best part is the free refills! Once you finish, they refill your bread bowl and you can even switch to a different soup if you want to try more. If your bread bowl collapses or gets too soggy, no worries, they’ll happily give you a regular bowl and still refill your soup. You can also ask for a small piece of butter for the bread, which is a nice touch. The soups are genuinely very good, warm, filling. They also have fresh homemade pancakes that you serve yourself, with jam and/or sugar. There’s good beer, free water (as everywhere in Iceland), and the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. Don’t take your best clothes since you will get a stinky smelly on those because the restaurant is full of soup smell. Overall, the free soup refills make this one of the best-value meals in the city. Great traditional icelandic food, great vibes, and perfect for travelers on a budget. Highly recommended!
This is the perfect place on a chilly night or day. All you can eat soup and a bread bowl. Free waffles. Great atmosphere. Wasn’t even super hungry when we stopped in here but saw the bread bowl soup someone else had in the window and it just looked like it would warm me up. Strongly recommend.
Icelandic Street Food offers a genuine taste of local cuisine, but my experience began on a slightly confusing note. When I arrived, I didn’t immediately feel welcomed — perhaps due to the restaurant being very crowded and the staff visibly overwhelmed. While understandable, this initial lack of clarity made the arrival feel a bit disorganized. Once seated, however, the experience improved considerably. We tried all three soups — tomato, fish, and lamb — and every one of them was excellent. The flavours were authentic, hearty, and comforting, and the price–quality ratio is truly outstanding. It’s clear that the soups are the highlight of the menu. The complimentary waffles are a nice gesture, but I feel this part of the service could benefit from a small upgrade. With only sugar or a single type of jam available, the topping options felt quite limited. Offering a slightly wider selection would elevate this detail and make the experience more in line with the generosity shown in the rest of the meal. Overall, despite a somewhat confusing start, Icelandic Street Food is a great place to get introduced to Icelandic gastronomy. The quality of the soups alone makes the visit worthwhile, and with a few adjustments in the reception and waffle offerings, the restaurant could deliver an even more welcoming and complete experience.
If you’re looking for a place in Reykjavík that delivers authentic, comforting regional cuisine without breaking the bank, then Icelandic Street Food is a must-visit. From the moment you walk in, the ethos is clear: simple, honest Icelandic fare done with care, in a relaxed, unpretentious space. We ordered the lamb soup in a bread bowl and it was everything you want from a dish like that. The rich, warming soup, the bread bowl soaking up all the liquid, the bowl of bread becomes a delicious part of the dining experience. Flavours and experience wise, it works wells It was filling, satisfying, and very well executed. The wind outside was cutting me in half so a warm soup was perfect. The space itself has great vibe: casual, welcoming, with a bit of local texture. The menu is straightforward, the staff friendly, and the environment comfortable, enough movement to feel lively, but not so much that you’re being rushed. What’s especially good: in a country known for high prices, Icelandic Street Food gives you a hearty regional meal, done simply and well, at a good price. I wasn’t needing a massive feed, but you can keep going back for refills and they have a few Icelandic “delicacies” you can try if you’re up for it. If you need to warm up, you should definitely drop by and dig into that bread-soaked lamb soup, while soaking in the atmosphere, and you will leave pleasantly full and glad you did.
This restaurant provides refillable soup for guests with only one-time payment. The shell fish and lamb are amazing. Staff are very warm and kind, a good place for someone who visits Iceland with limited budget.
