Today we present the outstanding "Wienertor" in
#HainbruganderDonau. It was widely built in only two phases. First, a representative gate as a double tower was built around 1230/1250. In the second phase, today's second floor was built in the 1260s, the construction of which could even be confirmed dendrochronologically. In the period around 1460/1520, the final balustrade of battlements was strengthened in order to put on a new roof. What can be seen on today's exterior only because of the small windows. The current roof dates back to the 1730s.
We especially like how precisely the humped ashlars indicate how the two construction phases of the 13th century can be distinguished from each other. Moreover, this gate and the other gates in Hainburg are the few examples with such a beautiful masonry of
#buckelquader (rusticated ashlars) in Austria, which are a specific feature for their time.
Today you can even regularly inspect this towergate from the inside, which we can definitely recommend, because inside it is the city museum, which has been open again since this weekend.
